Newspaper Video Uploads are Way Up

by Kate Ottenberg on April 13, 2009

Amid all of the doom and gloom news about the newspaper industry, Brightcove, which provides a popular platform for media companies looking to put video on the web, says that on average its newspaper customers in the U.S. uploaded 638 videos a month last year, up from 186 videos a month in 2007. Brightcove says that newspaper’s interest and investment in online video is being driven in large part by advertising dollars, as digital advertising is still growing.

According to Brightcove, on the consumer side, video streams are growing 35% per quarter, nearly tripling to 42.7 million during the fourth quarter of 2008 compared to the year-earlier period. Total video player “loads,” or page views containing video, increased 700% — suggesting that newspaper sites are putting video on more pages.

The New York Times does a particularly great job with online video. They combine well produced and packaged breaking news stories with fun and engaging home/style pieces.
